Emerging from the in-between realms of Morgantown, WV, and Millheim, PA, The Wild Shoats write an alt-folk soundtrack to the strange times they find themselves in. Characterized by the plaintive sound of fiddles and mountain singing, The Wild Shoats call on their collective background of Appalachian Old-Time, folk songs, and the high-lonesome to reimagine the songs and sounds of their home. The Wild Shoats won the Appalachian String Band Music Festival’s Neo-Traditional Band Competition in 2023, and released their debut album, Yell In The Shoats, in February of this year. The band is comprised of brothers Gus and Huck Tritsch (Millheim, PA) , Mary Linscheid (Morgantown, WV) , and Alex Heflin (Morgantown, WV) . Mary Linscheid calls herself a “songwriter, fiddler, and student of Appalachian singing traditions. ” She cut her teeth in the Morgantown, WV, music scene as a solo performer and for playing with the likes of Charles Wesley Godwin, Andrew Adkins, Chris Haddox, and Jesse Milnes. Mary released her EP “A Place to Grow Old” in June of 2022—original songs and a fiddle tune that explore her connection with her Appalachian home. Gus Tritsch has toured internationally with roots artist/scholar of Black folk music, Jake Blount, including performances at The Kennedy Center, San Francisco's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival, and KEXP radio in Seattle. Both brothers performed with Jake Blount for his NPR Tiny Desk Concert in January of 2023, and have won or placed in numerous categories at the Appalachian String Band Music Festival in Clifftop, WV. Old Time fiddling and singing run throughout (they took the title from a fiddle tune of the same name) but presented through songs and tunes of their own. Try a different browser. Banjo Player with “the Horse Flies” and “the Renegades”Richie Stearns will be the opener for The Wild Shoats on Friday, June 27, at 7PM. I got into playing music at 14 in junior high, with a pack of like-minded hippie kids. (A typical beginning, eh?) Except the kind of music we were exposed to was string band and jug band music. Locally there were some very active bands in these genres, while on our record players we had Lou Reed, Bob Marley, the Beatles, the Stones, Doc Watson, Jimmy Rogers, Hank Williams and the Skillet Lickers. The doors were wide open in those days. We went to experimental free schools that fostered creativity and independence above all. So while we were being tutored and steeped in acoustic fiddle music by mentors we found in the local music scene, we were also sent early on the road to thinking for ourselves, making our own kind of music. A founding member of both the Horse Flies and the Bubba George Stringband, Stearns has been a seminal player with the local acts Donna the Buffalo and Ti Ti Chickapea. He's on 10,000 Maniacs' "MTV Unplugged" album, and has recorded and toured with Jim Lauderdale and his former creative and romantic partner Jennie Stearns. In spring 2000, Natalie Merchant hired Judy Hyman and me to support her musically in an endeavor to merge her pop band with traditional fiddle music. After six weeks on the road with Natalie, I rejoined Donna the Buffalo as their keyboardist and banjo dude for a year. We toured on our own and played backup band to Peter Rowan and Grammy-award winning Jim Lauderdale, and jammed with Vassar Clements, on stage a few times. Since I left Donna the Buffalo, I’ve been busy. I’ve been pursuing my own music, releasing a solo CD and writing material for another one. Jennie has re-included me into her musical dream; she’s been touring solo, with me, with Gabe Tavares, and with her full band to promote her most recent CD Sing Desire.
