The History Book Group will meet on the second floor of the library on Thursday, December 18 at 3:00 p.m. to discuss the first half of We Don’t Know Ourselves: A Personal History of Modern Ireland by Fintan O’Toole. We Don’t Know Ourselves chronicles Ireland’s dramatic transformation from the late 1950s to today through the life of writer Fintan O’Toole. Born as Ireland first opened to global influence, O’Toole blends personal history with national change, tracing the country’s shift from a conservative, church-dominated society to a modern, outward-looking nation. With sharp insight, he highlights milestones such as the collapse of Catholic authority, the violence of the Troubles, and the rise of American cultural and economic influence, offering a vivid portrait of one of the most striking national evolutions in recent history. The group will discuss the second half of the book for the January meeting.
