The Maturango Museum celebrates the Summer Solstice on Saturday, June 21st , from 10 am to
noon. The museum will provide a suncatcher craft and an educational model of the sun and
Earth to view. As an additional bonus, the China Lake Astronomical Society may bring their
solar scopes for people to view the sun.
The summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere marks the beginning of summer and is the
longest day and shortest night of the year. On this day, the number of hours of daylight is at its
maximum, while the number of hours of night is at its minimum. In the Southern Hemisphere,
the solstice marks the shortest day of the year and the longest night. It’s important to note that
the summer solstice is not just a day but an exact moment in time that falls upon that day. At
the exact moment that the Northern Hemisphere is most tilted toward the Sun, the Northern
Hemisphere experiences its summer solstice. It is the Earth’s tilt that causes winter and
summer. The exact moment of the 2025 solstice is June 20 at 7:41 pm.
