On October 9, 1779, 29 year old Sgt. William Jasper of the Continental Army, succumbed to his injuries received during the Siege of Savannah, led by General Lincoln. Sgt. Jasper and his friend, Sgt. John Newton, are memorialized in the popular stories of Parson Weems and neighboring counties of Newton and Jasper are common in several states.
