Sometimes called the Assyrian Odyssey, Gilgameshis a too-much-neglected masterpiece of world literature and the prototype for superhero sagas. Written about a thousand years before the oldest parts of the Bible, it has all that we expect from an epic: divinitys action in our lives, a heros travails and accomplishments, dramatic depth, and poetic insight. In addition to a close reading of the text, we will discuss how the translators art profoundly affects our experience. Joseph Alulis returns to lead this three-week session of Big Books, a guided discussion series of major works of literature. Sponsored by the Friends of the Glencoe Public Library.
