Details:
Join the Berks History Center for a unique, day-long bus tour through the Amish heritage of Berks County, led by BHC Trustee Elam Stoltzfus, Executive Director of the Nicholas Stoltzfus Homestead. This immersive experience invites participants to explore the earliest Amish settlements, starting with Jacob Burkey's arrival in 1733 and traveling to Northkill, the first Amish settlement in North America from 1737. Delve into the migration journey of the Amish from Europe to Pennsylvania and their pursuit of religious freedom, highlighted by discussions on pivotal events like the Hochstetler Massacre (1757) during the French and Indian War, and the Degler’s Chest Incident (1752), reflecting the challenges faced by early settlers.
The tour departs from the Nicholas Stoltzfus Homestead (1700 Tulpehocken Road, Wyomissing, PA) at 8 AM and returns at 4 PM, including lunch at a local restaurant (details to be announced) and the bus driver’s tip. Space is limited—reserve your seat to uncover nearly 300 years of Amish history for $125.00 for BHC members and $150.00 for non-members.
