The 1000 Islands Environmental Center, established in 1969, is a 350-acre conservancy zone dedicated to preserving natural resources and promoting environmental education, conservation, and recreation. It offers public access to enjoy natural resources through miles of trails for hiking and snowshoeing, as well as access to the Fox River for activities like kayaking. The center provides year-round educational programs for all ages, focusing on the interrelationships between humans and the environment. Inside the Nature Center, visitors can find live animals, interactive educational displays, a collection of Fox River arrowheads, native animals, and a gift shop. The center also uniquely employs resident goats for natural control of invasive plant species, offering a glimpse into eco-friendly conservation efforts. The mission of the 1000 Islands Environmental Center is to equip children, adults, and families with the knowledge and skills necessary to foster a sustainable balance between the environment, economy, and community. The center is administered by a committee and is supported by the City of Kaukauna, Outagamie County, and the Kaukauna Area School District. Admission to the Nature Center and trails is free, though donations are appreciated.
